The Play Retreat Manifesto

THE FOUNDING DOCUMENT

You were never supposed to turn into a piece of machinery. You got efficient because something had to hold, and you were the one who could. You learned to read the room, smooth the friction, hit the dates, keep the perimeter. And somewhere along the way being capable stopped being a skill and started being a cage.

The reward for coping well was more to cope with. A salary, a title, a house, and the unspoken job of being the wall everything leans on. If you stop, things wobble. If you crack, the house shakes. So you held your breath, set your jaw, and quietly traded feeling anything for keeping everything running.

A bath will not fix a nervous system that has gone numb. It just tunes the engine so you can get back in the same box on Monday.

You are not tired. You are numb. Your whole day happens against glass, plastic, laminate, and air that came out of a vent. You have lived so long inside your own head and your own calendar that your body has become luggage you drag to meetings. The answer to that is not another breathing app. It is touching something real.

To an adult trained to produce, play feels genuinely risky. It earns nothing. It goes on no CV. It solves no problem and helps nobody. Which is precisely why it works. When your hands are full of wet clay, when your feet are on uneven ground, when you are laughing so hard it hurts at something completely pointless — that is when your body finally believes the emergency is over.

Underneath the one who remembers everything is the kid who used to run outside without checking the time. She did not die. She got put away so the house could keep running.

This is not a spa. It is being taken out of the machine for a bit. Your usefulness is worth nothing here — you are not allowed to sort the room out, or make sure everyone else is alright. The clock goes. What comes back is cold water, fire, mud, loud music, proper silence. You can be a mess, wide-eyed, knackered, and free.

I am not spending the rest of my life just keeping things going. I am not dying with a perfectly cleared calendar and no memory of how light moves on water. Put the clipboard down. Get out of the engine. Come and be amazed by something.
